There are times in life when your breath is taken away, your breathing patterns become deep and our mind wonders whether what you just saw was a dream. You want to tell someone what you saw and rave like a lunatic whilst the victim of your madness looks at you as if you were a mad man.
In a cold night in Milan, at the famous San Siro, we witnessed such an occurrence. If God came on earth for a game of football, he would find no greater body than that of a failed Italian import simply called Thierry Henry. An embodiment of why we all love football, why we crave it and why we dream of it. The result will be forgotten, though significant as it is to the destiny of Arsenal football club, but few will forget the performance of Thierry Henry. The control, the precision, the style, the passion, the finesse and the vavavoom.
We live in fortunate times. Yes, we do. We get to see Thierry Henry each week in our local league, caressing the ball and painting a glorious picture of how football should be played. Whether the English premier league is the best in the world is questionable, where the best player in the world plies his trade is not. Maybe it is time we put football fans out of their misery and build a stadium that is deserving of Thierry Henry’s presence. Only 35,000 people get to see him each week, one wonders whether this is a waste of precious talent. By the time the stadium is built, Thierry Henry will be in the twilight of his career. Let us toast a great great player who is truly an entertainer and surely one of the finest, if not the finest, the English league has ever seen. Let us sit back and enjoy the next four years for they will be golden moments to remember when we are old and grey. Today, I thank Thierry Henry for showing us a vision of the world, which we never imagined possible, doing things we never believed could be done and now Thierry Henry, as he walks off to a standing ovation, please give us time to get our breath back.
